A common trend that we have been noticing is that often times, dogs are surrendered due to a lack of training. We understand that a great majority of dog owners do not have an extensive background in animal behavior. We are aiming to help bridge that gap! At A&P Rescue, we strive to set all adopters and their new family member up for success.
When dogs leave a shelter environment, are put on a long transport, or even locally rehomed, the most important step in helping them adjust is to allow them to decompress. Some dogs decompress in a few days and some take much longer. This is a time where they can relax and unwind.
During this phase, it's important to give your dog plenty of time to get some much-needed rest and relaxation and to take in the new sights and smells of your home.
The first thing adopters want to do when they welcome home a new pet is to take them on a world tour. PLEASE do not do this. Your new furry friend does not need to go to the pet store, dog park, or to meet everyone and their mother.
What your new dog does needs is: space, quiet, comfort and structure.
